baby scarlet macawSome Considerations Before Purchasing

Before considering adding a parrot to your household you should realize and acknowledge the following:

  • Parrots live a long time compared to most pets. At first glance this seems wonderful as our time with our pets is usually too short. However, with a parrot there are many instances where the parrot will outlive their owner(s). So these considerations must be look at and addressed.
  • Parrots are extremely intelligent their minds require challenges, interaction, socialization; their personalities require love, attention and devotion. Commitment of time and energy is extensive. Parrots require your attention. They are not content to just sit and wait for your devotion when you are ready to give it.
  • Parrots are messy! If you are looking for a pet that is neat and tidy a parrot is not it. They throw their food around, they lose feathers, they dismantle their toys, their cages require daily cleaning, their food dishes need to be washed and scrubbed daily with many other additional cleaning tasks.

  • Parrots can be very dusty. There are a number of types of parrots, eg: African Greys, Cockatoos that are extremely dusty parrots. Many people have issues with allergies, asthma etc. around these particular species.
  • Parrots can be very expensive. They require good, large cages, lots of toys, lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts etc. Parrots require veterinary care. Many individuals do not realize the expense to treat their companions when ill or for yearly checkups.
  • Parrots can be very noisy depending on the species. Please make sure you know your tolerances, your families tolerances and your neighbours. Remember to a parrot their vocalization is a normal behaviour so this is something that is not easily corrected if it becomes a problem situation.
